Alvin Kao

Robotics Engineer at Covariant

Alvin Kao has a diverse work experience in the field of robotics and engineering. Alvin is currently working as a Robotics Engineer at Covariant since 2021.

Prior to that, they worked as a Graduate Student Researcher at Berkeley RISE Lab from June 2019 to December 2020. In this role, they worked on the development of a modular autonomous driving platform called Pylot. Alvin used Pytorch and Tensorflow to implement, train, and evaluate models in simulated driving scenarios, with a focus on vehicle trajectory prediction. Alvin also worked on projects related to planning with low-resolution state input for autonomous vehicles and option discovery for Markov decision processes.

Alvin also had teaching experience at UC Berkeley College of Engineering. Alvin served as an Undergraduate Student Instructor for the EECS 126 course in Spring 2019, where they created iPython labs to demonstrate real-world probability applications. Alvin also led weekly discussion sections, office hours, and exam review sessions.

Additionally, Alvin worked as a Software Engineer Intern at Google in 2018. In this role, they revamped the back-end pipeline that generates geographical targets in Google Ads systems. Alvin improved pipeline efficiency through the implementation of parallel algorithms, resulting in better coverage and more precise advertising targets.

Before that, Alvin was an Undergraduate Student Instructor for the EECS 126 and CS 70 courses at UC Berkeley College of Engineering. In these roles, they led discussions, developed problem sets, and provided academic support to students.

Overall, Alvin Kao has shown expertise in robotics, autonomous driving, software engineering, teaching, and probability theory throughout their work experience.

Alvin Kao started their education in 2011 at Mission San Jose High School, where they completed their high school education from 2011 to 2015. Alvin then went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley from 2015 to 2019, where they earned their Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. Alvin Kao further pursued their education at the University of California, Berkeley from 2019 to 2020, obtaining a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.
