Matt Pennybacker, Ph.D. has a long and varied work experience. In 2005, they were a System Administrator for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where they operated web, email, and calendar servers for twenty staff members and more than fifty student organizations. Matt also helped to develop a dynamic budgeting system using PHP to distribute more than a million dollars in student activity fees between those organizations. In 2008, they were a Graduate Technical Intern for Intel Corporation, where they were a member of the Graphics Technology Group and was responsible for the development of tests for the chipset logic and the maintenance of a testbench used in a number of validation tools. From 2010 to 2013, they were a Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Selforganization. From 2013 to 2017, they were an Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of New Mexico. During this time, they developed high performance code for simulation of nonlinear partial differential equations on complex domains using structure preserving numerical methods, created a robust model of the biochemistry involved in the formation of patterns on plants, designed a time integration scheme based on approximations to the matrix exponential for full-wave and effective medium simulations of metamaterials, and performed rigorous asymptotic analysis along with long-time numerical simulations to characterize nanostructures that form on certain surfaces following ion bombardment. Lastly, since 2019, they have been an Applications Engineer at DeepSig Inc.
Matt Pennybacker, Ph.D. obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Mathematics from the University of Arizona in 2013. Prior to that, they earned their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering and Computer & Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2007.
