Laura Sheehan

Senior Vice President, External Affairs at Defenders of Wildlife

Laura Sheehan has a diverse work experience spanning different industries and roles. Laura started their career in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as the Communications Director for the Committee on Energy and Commerce from 1999 to 2003. Following that, they worked as the Policy Director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 2003 to 2005. Laura then transitioned to the private sector and held the position of Managing Director for the Energy and Environment Team at FD Dittus Communications from 2005 to 2008. Laura went on to become the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Vice President of Communications at the American Gas Association from 2008 to 2011. From 2012 to 2013, they worked as the Managing Director and DC Public Affairs Leader at Burson-Marsteller. Laura then took on the role of Senior Vice President of Communications at the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity from 2013 to 2017. During the same period, they were also an Adjunct Professor of Public Affairs at Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies. From 2017 to 2020, they worked as the President of Sheehan Strategies, their own consulting firm. Laura then joined American Humane as the Senior Vice President of Communications and Legislative Affairs from 2020 to 2023. Currently, they serve as the Senior Vice President of External Affairs at Defenders of Wildlife.

Laura Sheehan obtained a Master's degree in Communications from American University.
