Hugh Pope

Hugh Pope currently serves as a Member of the International Advisory Council at DemocracyNext and will take on the role of Chief of External Affairs at the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) from August 2023 to August 2024, focusing on global political violence data. Prior experience includes a long tenure at the International Crisis Group from 2007 to February 2022, where Pope held the position of Director of Communications & Outreach, overseeing global communications and media relations. Earlier roles included Deputy Director for the Europe & Central Asia Program and Director of the Turkey/Cyprus Project, as well as positions as Middle East correspondent and Turkey and Central Asia correspondent for The Wall Street Journal from 1997 to 2005. Hugh Pope holds a degree in Oriental Studies, specializing in Persian with Arabic, from the University of Oxford.
