Mike Barwis is currently the Director of Sports Science and Human Performance for the Detroit Red Wings, a position they have held since 2014. Prior to that, they worked as a Sports Science Consultant for the Miami Dolphins from January 2014 to December 2015. In this role, they worked with the owner, GM, president, head coach, and strength coach in designing and implementing facility adaptations to accommodate cutting edge equipment and scientific training principles. Mike also worked to update facilities and eliminate any outdated practices as well as educate administration and team members on the use of the beneficial scientific principles.
From January 2011 to February 2021, Barwis was the Senior Advisor Sports Science and Human Performance for the New York Mets. In this role, they worked directly with the owner, GM, and coaching staff to design, review, oversee, and assist with the implementation of the strength and conditioning program at the major league and minor league levels. Mike was also responsible for researching, interviewing, and hiring of new staff.
Barwis is also the founder and CEO of First Step Foundation, a foundation dedicated to helping individuals with physical challenges achieve their full potential through adaptive sports and recreation.
Their manager is Steven Stamkos, Executive Vice President & General Manager. Mike Barwis works with Aaron Kahn - Director of Hockey Operations, Bryan Campbell - Director of Statistical Analysis & Hockey Administration, and Kris Draper - Director of Amateur Scouting.
