Shay Barker has a diverse range of work experience spanning various roles and responsibilities. In 2011, they worked as a Project Assistant at the University of Alberta, where they assisted with research, grant writing, and report writing. In 2012, at the Battle River Alliance for Economic Development, Shay served as a Social Media & Program Manager, introducing the organization to social media platforms and contributing to program development and marketing. From 2013 to 2015, they served as the Executive Director of the Battle River Alliance for Economic Development, focusing on regional economic development initiatives. In 2015, Shay became an Economic Development Officer at Airdrie Economic Development, primarily working on business attraction, retention, and expansion efforts. They joined Startup Edmonton in 2017 as a Program Manager, facilitating connections and providing support for entrepreneurs and product builders. Most recently, in 2019, Shay joined DrugBank as an Operations Manager, and later served as the Manager and Director of People & Culture, responsible for managing the company's human resources and fostering a positive workplace culture.
Shay Barker completed a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in History with a minor in Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Alberta - Augustana Campus from 2006 to 2011. Their field of study during this time focused on Canadian Heritage and Rural Revitalization. In 2012, Shay attended Memorial University of Newfoundland, where their field of study was History. The duration of this educational experience is unspecified. In 2016, Shay enrolled at the University of Waterloo and began pursuing a Year 1 Economic Development Certification.
