Tyler Tape has a diverse range of work experience. Tyler began their career as an Assistant Language Teacher in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) from 2007 to 2010, where they planned and conducted English lessons for Japanese children. Tyler then pursued a Masters degree at The University of Tokyo from 2012 to 2014, focusing on researching Japanese literature and thought. Following this, Tyler worked as an iOS Developer at Gunosy Inc. from 2014 to 2015, where they maintained and extended the existing codebase and introduced testing infrastructure. Tyler then joined Tumblr as an iOS Engineer from 2015 to 2017, where they worked on maintaining critical infrastructure for the iPhone app. Tyler then joined WeWork as an iOS Engineer from 2018 to 2019, before eventually joining Duolingo as a Software Engineer in November 2019.
Tyler Tape holds a Master's degree in Early Modern Japanese Literature from The University of Tokyo, which they earned from 2010 to 2014. Prior to that, from 2003 to 2007, they completed their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Japanese Language and Literature at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Additionally, in 2005 to 2006, Tyler Tape studied at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, although the specific degree obtained or field of study is unknown. Their high school education was completed from 1999 to 2003 at Rockland High School. Moreover, they have obtained certifications such as The Japan Kanji Aptitude Test, Level 2 in 2009 and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, Level 1 in 2006.
