From 2019 to 2021, they were the Chief Executive Officer and Director and Founder of Ellipsis Earth. From 2018 to 2019, they were a Field Producer & Presenter at Encounter Edu. From 2018 to 2019, they were a Multimedia Editor at Springer Nature. From 2016 to 2018, they were a Mission Director at The Plastic Tide. From 2015 to 2016, they were a Freelance Science Communicator at Ellie Worldwide. From 2008 to 2015, they were a Guest Producer at Sky.

Ellie Mackay obtained a Master's Degree in Science Communication from Imperial College London between 2014 and 2015. Prior to that, they obtained a Master's degree in Natural Sciences (Biological) from the University of Cambridge between 2005 and 2009. Additionally, they obtained a degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge.
