Derek Machalek has worked in a variety of roles since 2014. Derek began as a Chemical Engineering Intern at Strategic Environmental and Energy Resources, where they researched molecules and gave presentations on solutions for separating out siloxanes and other malicious molecules. Derek then moved to the University of Colorado Boulder as a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant, where they worked on computation chemistry and understanding different properties of molecules using theoretical calculations. In 2016, they became an Assistant Health Scientist at Cardno ChemRisk. In 2020, they took on the role of Graduate Student Intern at Sandia National Laboratories. Currently, they are a PhD Student at the University of Utah, and they will soon start as a Scientific Computing Engineer at Emerald Cloud Lab in 2022.
Derek Machalek obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder College of Engineering & Applied Science in 2016. Derek then went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah, which they are expected to finish in 2021.
