Prior to this role, Jerry gained valuable experience in the restaurant industry, starting as a staff member and ultimately advancing to Assistant Manager at The Peddler Steak House from February 1971 until the restaurant chain's closure in April 1983. Jerry's career transitioned into the liquor industry following this experience. Jerry attended Tennessee Technological University from 1978 to 1980, focusing on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, although did not complete a degree.
