Richard began their career in 1987 in the Oil, Gas, and Chemicals Industries sector, where they held various managerial and technical roles. During this time, they also served as a Consultancy Group Manager at Trident Consultants, overseeing key sales initiatives and revenue growth.

In 1999, Burgess joined Air Liquide, where they held the position of Group Level Finance Manager, Director of Business Development, and Strategic Analyst. Richard was responsible for group-level financial management and played a crucial role in major investment projects.

In 2007, Burgess joined Turner & Townsend as Vice President and later Director of the Energy Practice. Richard was responsible for business growth and financial performance within the US Energy Practice. Burgess also led business development activities for top-tier energy clients, including BP, BG, and Shell.

From 2013 to 2015, Burgess served as a Managing Partner at ERM: Environmental Resources Management. Richard was a member of the company's Senior Leadership Team and established and led the global Project Management Office (PMO). Since 2016, Burgess has been working at EPMA as the Executive Vice President, leading the project management consulting practice. Richard focuses on providing practical application of industry best practices to enhance project and portfolio delivery, resulting in cost savings and performance improvements for clients ranging from mid-size organizations to Fortune 100 companies.

Richard Burgess attended Teesside University from 1983 to 1987, where they earned a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree in Chemical Engineering.
