Marieke van der Werf has an extensive work experience in the field of public health and disease prevention. Marieke served as the Head of Section for STI, Blood-Borne Viruses, and TB at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) since October 2021. Prior to this, they held various leadership positions within ECDC, including Head of Disease Programmes related to Sexual Transmitted Infections, Blood-Borne Viruses, and Tuberculosis (SBT), as well as Acting Head of Disease Programme Vaccine-Preventable Diseases.
Before joining ECDC, Marieke worked at the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation, where they served as the Head of Unit for Knowledge Management, Research, and Policy Development. Marieke also held the positions of Head of Research Unit and Senior Epidemiologist at KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation.
Marieke's academic experience includes an Associate Professor role at the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, where they worked from 2009 to 2012. Marieke also completed their Ph.D. fellowship at Erasmus MC from 1999 to 2003.
Marieke'searly career started as a Medical Doctor/Researcher at the Municipal Health Service Amsterdam in 1998.

In 1999, Marieke earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Netherlands School of Public Health, while concurrently studying at Erasmus University Rotterdam where they completed their PhD in Medicine from 1999 to 2003. Lastly, Marieke attended the Centre international de formation européenne from 2015 to 2017, where they earned a Master's degree in European Union Studies.
