William Fry has a strong background in mechanical design engineering with experience in various industries. Starting in 2013, they worked as a Head of Exhaust Design for the Southampton University Formula Student Team, where they designed and organized the manufacture of exhaust systems for race cars. William later joined GKN Aerospace as a Composites Engineer, where they improved the manufacturing method of a radius filler noodle for composite aircraft wings.
In 2014, William Fry returned to the Southampton University Formula Student Team, this time as the Head of Drivetrain. William led the re-design of the transmission for the team's entry into Formula Student UK, achieving a 50% weight decrease and implementing a novel chain tensioning method. From 2015 to 2017, they worked as a Design Engineer for Good Fabrications Ltd., where they led the exhaust design for a Kawasaki ZX10-R race motorcycle and communicated with customers, including Formula One teams.
In 2016, William Fry became a Design Engineer at obp Motorsport, where they created and developed designs for aftermarket motorsport parts. William also represented the company at AutoSport International 2017. From 2017 to 2018, they worked as a Design Engineer at SST Technology, gaining further experience in design engineering.
From 2019 to 2020, William Fry served as a Mechanical Design Engineer for Renault Sport Racing, before joining Alpine in 2020 in the same role. At Alpine, they designed key components for Formula 1 cars and achieved notable successes in races.
In 2022, they joined the UK Atomic Energy Authority as a Mechanical Design Engineer, working on a remote maintenance research project for robotic welding technology. William also managed inputs to Europe's DEMOnstration nuclear fusion power plant and presented maintenance concepts for the UK's STEP nuclear fusion power plant.
Their most recent work experience is with Evolito Ltd, where they currently serve as a Mechanical Design Engineer.
William Fry completed their high school education at King's School in Bruton from 2007 to 2012. William obtained their A Levels and GCSEs during this time. Following that, they pursued a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Aeronautics & Astronautics with a specialization in Aerodynamics at the University of Southampton from 2012 to 2016.
