Chimba Mkandawire has extensive work experience in engineering and research. Chimba started their career at VA Puget Sound in 1999 as a Health Research Specialist, where they conducted research for the VA Center of Excellence for Limb Loss Prevention and Prosthetic Engineering. In 2002, they joined Exponent as a Principal Engineer. Chimba then moved to Drexel University in 2004, where they worked as a Research Assistant Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems until 2012.
Chimba Mkandawire completed an S.B. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1990 to 1994. Following this, they pursued further education at the University of Washington, where they obtained a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from 1994 to 2002.
