John W. Henry is one of the founders of Fenway Sports Group and has been its Principal Owner since its creation in 2001. Mr. Henry has over 36 years of experience as a founder, manager and investor in sports, finance, media and business enterprises, including over 31 years of experience in baseball ownership, winning four World Series championships with the Boston Red Sox.
Prior to founding Fenway Sports Group to purchase the Red Sox, he was chairman and sole owner of the Miami Marlins from 1999 through 2002 and a limited partner of the New York Yankees from 1990 through 1998, where he was a part of two more World Series Championship teams. Mr. Henry currently serves on various Major League Baseball committees, including its Executive Council and Labor Policy Committee. For more than 30 years he also served as chairman of the John W. Henry & Company Inc., global investment management firm, which he founded in 1981.
Mr. Henry has served on the Board of Directors of the Future Industry Association, National Association of Futures Trading Advisors and the Managed Futures Trade Association. He was elected to the Futures Industry Association’s Hall of Fame as a recognized leader in alternative asset financial product innovation.
Mr. Henry is also the owner of The Boston Globe through his company Boston Globe Media Partners LLC, an affiliate of Fenway Sports Group.
Mr. Henry currently serves as a board member of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and helped found, and fund, the Red Sox Foundation, the largest team charity in MLB.
Mr. Henry has received honorary doctorate degrees from Northeastern University and Boston University. He has also received the Charles Hamilton Houston Justice Award, the Master Entrepreneur of the Year Award in New England and a lifetime achievement award from Alternative Investment News.
