James Joshua Claus, PhD

James Joshua Claus, PhD has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of investment technology and finance. James Joshua is currently serving as the CTO and Co-Founder of Flex Axion, a company involved in the development and implementation of innovative technologies.

Prior to their current role, Dr. Claus held the position of Executive in Residence and Director of the ULISSES Project at the University of Utah - David Eccles School of Business. In this role, they instructed graduate-level courses focused on asset management, risk, valuation, financial analysis, and modeling. James Joshua also managed the Computational Finance Lab and supervised student software projects.

Before joining the University of Utah, Dr. Claus served as the Head of Research at RAND LABS, where they led research and development efforts in investment technology systems, including research, risk, portfolio management, and trading systems. James Joshua was also responsible for training and mentoring investment technology, portfolio management, and trading teams.

Dr. Claus has also contributed significantly to the development of the investment technology field through their involvement in The ULISSES Project, an initiative aimed at the in-housing of investment management activities by pension funds, endowments, and sovereign wealth funds. James Joshua founded and directed this project, which sought to apply hard science innovations in prediction, risk assessment, and operations science.

During their tenure at Moon Capital, Dr. Claus served as the Managing Director and Head of Quantitative Strategies. James Joshua led the investment technology build-out, utilizing various programming languages and advanced technologies. James Joshua also developed an internal analyst-driven shadow portfolio system.

Prior to that, Dr. Claus held management positions at GMN Capital, LP and GSA Capital, where they played a critical role in the development and implementation of investment technology systems.

Earlier in their career, Dr. Claus worked as a Research Officer at Barclays Global Investors and served as Executive Education Faculty and Staff at Columbia University in the City of New York.

Throughout their career, Dr. Claus has demonstrated expertise in investment technology, research, risk management, and portfolio management. James Joshua has utilized a variety of programming languages and technologies, including Python, R, SAS, SQL, C++, JavaScript, and VBA. James Joshua'scontributions have been instrumental in advancing the field of investment technology and finance.

James Joshua Claus, PhD completed their education in a chronological order. From 1989 to 1995, they attended Brigham Young University where they obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Accountancy degree. During this time, they also pursued a minor in Economics and focused on preparing for a Ph.D. program. Later, from 1995 to 2000, Claus attended Columbia University and earned their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. James Joshua'sfield of study during their Ph.D. program was Financial Accounting with a specific focus on Capital Markets.
