Russell began their career in 1996 as a Loan Officer at Republic Bank & Trust, where they originated and closed consumer loans and solicited customers for complete banking relationships. In 1997, they joined Paducah Bank and Trust as a Loan Review Officer, responsible for reviewing in-house loan relationships for compliance issues and creditworthiness.

During their time at Paducah Bank & Trust, Smith also served as an AVP, conducting staff compliance training and successfully managing three compliance examinations. Russell developed compliance policies and composed comment letters. Smith then moved on to become an Assistant Security Officer and later a Compliance Officer at The Paducah Bank and Trust Company, overseeing the implementation of new regulations and conducting testing to ensure compliance.
