Guy Haskin Fernald

Senior Staff Data Scientist at Foresite Labs

Guy Haskin Fernald has a wide range of work experience in various roles. Guy Haskin started their career as the Founder and Chief Programmer of a software startup called Netmarket in 1993. Guy Haskin co-founded the company, hired engineers, and led software development efforts, including writing software for the first music CD store on the web.

In 1996, Fernald joined Ariba, Inc. as a Software Engineer and Group Manager. Guy Haskin was part of the original technical team that developed a patented purchasing system in Java and worked on the first six versions of the released software. Guy Haskin also managed a team of programmers and implemented internationalization, management tools, and web applications.

From 2001 to 2003, Fernald worked as a Technical Consultant at Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública. In this role, they developed direction and managed the implementation of internal and external computer resources for the health economics group. Guy Haskin was fluent in both Spanish and English.

In 2004, Fernald joined UCSF as a Research Associate and worked there until 2007. Guy Haskin then moved to Stanford University School of Medicine where they worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant until 2014. As a research associate in biomedical informatics, their responsibilities included conducting original research, developing software to analyze and investigate hypotheses, teaching and mentoring students, and collaborating with external research groups.

In 2015, Fernald took on the role of a Tech Consultant and Developer. Guy Haskin investigated commercial applications of biomedical research and developed software using R, Python, and AWS to analyze biological and chemical datasets. Guy Haskin also performed due diligence and invested in tech and biotech startups.

From 2016 to 2018, Fernald worked as a Data Scientist at Vium, and since 2018, they have been employed as a Senior Staff Data Scientist at Foresite Labs.

Guy Haskin Fernald earned a Ph.D in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University between 2009 and 2014. Prior to this, they obtained a Master's of Science in Medicine from Stanford University School of Medicine, which was completed between 2007 and 2009. Fernald also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Swarthmore College, where they studied from 1990 to 1994.
