Richard Southern

Richard Southern has a diverse work experience in various roles and companies. Richard currently holds the position of Lead Research Engineer in Machine Learning at Foundry since September 2023. Prior to that, they worked as the Lead Developer at Foundry.

From 2008 to 2022, Richard worked at Bournemouth University, where they held multiple positions including Head of Department at the National Centre for Computer Animation, Principal Academic, Senior Lecturer, and Research Lecturer. During their tenure, they were responsible for the quality and delivery of computer animation programs, taught programming and other related subjects, and conducted research in various areas such as bipedal locomotion, fluid dynamics, character modeling, and animation.

Before joining Bournemouth University, Richard worked as a Software Engineer at EM Software & Systems S.A. (Pty) Ltd from November 2001 to October 2003. In this role, they led a team developing POSTFEKO and also worked on a prototype for the modeling system CADFEKO.

Richard Southern completed their education in the field of Computer Science. Richard obtained a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, which they pursued from 2003 to 2008. Prior to that, they earned an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Cape Town, which they completed in 2001. Richard's undergraduate education took place at the University of the Witwatersrand, where they obtained a BSc in Computer Science between 1996 and 1998. Additionally, Richard holds certifications such as Scrum Master Certified (SMC) from The Knowledge Academy, obtained in 2023, and a PG Cert in Education Practice from Bournemouth University.
