Dr. Guy A. Sims has a diverse work experience, including roles in various educational institutions. Dr. Guy A. began their career at Montgomery County Community College in 1987 working in admissions. Dr. Guy A. then moved on to the University of Northern Iowa, where they served as the Interim Director of the Maucker Union, managing daily operations and supervising a staff. In 2006, they joined Virginia Tech as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. At Bluefield State College, they held multiple positions, including Assistant to the President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and later Dean of Students. Currently, they serve as the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Dr. Guy A. Sims has a diverse educational background. Dr. Guy A. obtained their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Human Services from Lincoln University, where they studied from 1979 to 1983. Dr. Guy A. further pursued their education and earned a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Educational Leadership from Arcadia University, which they completed from 1987 to 1989. Dr. Sims then pursued a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Human Behavior from National University, studying from 1992 to 1994.

Continuing their academic journey, Dr. Sims earned an Education Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Higher Education from the University of Northern Iowa, where they studied from 1997 to 2003. Dr. Guy A. also obtained multiple additional certifications throughout their career. In 2009, they received a Certificate in Executive Development from Virginia Tech's Executive Development Institute. That same year, they obtained a Certificate in Higher Education Law & Policy from Stetson University College of Law.

Dr. Sims also has additional certifications, including an Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificate from The Center for Legal Studies obtained in May 2020, a Civil Rights Investigator, Level III certification from the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA) obtained in July 2016, an Executive Leadership Summit Certificate from Hampton University obtained in July 2016, a Certificate in Student Affairs Law and Policy from NASPA/Stetson College of Law obtained in July 2009, and a Prevention of, Response to, and Recovery from Campus Emergencies certification from LSU/FEMA obtained in June 2009.
