Mieke Van Herreweghe

Vice Rector at Ghent University

Professor Mieke Van Herreweghe (°1965) has been vice-rector of Ghent University since 1 October 2017. Her term as Vice-Rector runs until September 30, 2025.

The Vice-Rector, together with Rector Rik Van de Walle, heads Ghent University.

In 1987 she obtained a master's degree in Germanic Philology and a year later an MA in Linguistics from University College Dublin (Ireland).

After a fellowship as a candidate at the Research Foundation - Flanders, she obtained her doctorate in 1996 at Ghent University as a doctor in linguistics and literature: Germanic languages.

Since 2012, Mieke Van Herreweghe has been a Professor of English Linguistics. Her field of research includes English linguistics (diachronic linguistics on the one hand and foreign language acquisition on the other) and Flemish Sign Language.

From 2012 to 2017 she was a member of the Research Council of the university. She was chair of the Language and Literature Program from 2012 to 2016 and the research director of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy from 2016 to 2017. She was also a laureate of the UGent Minerva award for education.
