Job description

Gowan Company is searching for an experienced Formulation Chemist who will be part of a formulation development team responsible for defining, innovating, developing and scaling up formulations associated to new and existing crop protection products. The Formulation Chemist will work within established Laboratory SOP’s and structures, work collaboratively within a team and with other R&D functions, and provide formulation support for projects from Quality and Manufacturing functions. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop a whole range experimental formulations for crop protection products
  • Use knowledge of physical and chemical test methods to identify lead formulas
  • Evaluate results and suggest direction for further development and improvements
  • Actively participate in the identification and development of novel formulation development methods and technologies.
  • Record concepts, formulations, test results, etc., in lab notebooks.
  • Support establishment of trade secrets, patents, etc., involving formulations
  • Prepare reports, presentations on results of laboratory testing
  • Ensure that Product Specifications are compatible with Regulatory requirements
  • Conduct Pilot Plant process studies on lead formulations
  • Conduct preparation of formulations for field and regulatory studies
  • Identify lab equipment to facilitate lab safety and project efficiency
  • Partner with internal functions (Marketing, Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Legal) to resolve issues, identify project success criteria and timelines, and achieve valuable technology and products.
  • Represent Gowan to external suppliers of ingredients, toll manufacturers of agricultural active ingredients and formulations, and contract laboratories
  • Work in accordance with established SOP’s and procedures
  • Input into process improvements and working practices
  • Travel (<10% of time) to attend conferences, field tests, manufacturing trials, and training

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education:

  • Masters or Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry or related fields.

  • Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of chemical formulation experience (industrial or academic) in preparing formulations for agriculture, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, cleaners, or food, or personal care industries

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with multi-phase mixtures (dispersions, emulsions, etc.) with various formulation production or analytical piece of equipment
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office applications
  • Ability to prioritise time and tasks and to work in a busy environment
  • Ability to understand the project aspects and timelines of new formulation developments.
  • Flexibility to learn new tasks and skills
  • Have good organisational and communication skills
