Iulian Dragos

Iulian Dragos has a diverse range of work experience in the software engineering field. Iulian is currently working as a Principal Software Engineer at Gradle Inc., starting in February 2023. Prior to joining Gradle, Iulian was the CEO and Co-founder of Triplequote LLC (acquired by Gradle Inc) from October 2016 to March 2023. Iulian also worked as a Staff Software Engineer at Databricks from April 2020 to November 2022.

Before their time at Databricks, Iulian held multiple roles at Lightbend (formerly Typesafe). Iulian was a Tech Lead for the Spark team from December 2014 to April 2016, Head of Office from September 2011 to January 2016, and a Senior Software Engineer from May 2011 to December 2014. In this role, they focused on development tools for Scala, including leading the development of the Scala Eclipse plugin and contributing to the Scala compiler and other development tools.

Prior to joining Lightbend, Iulian worked as a Software Engineer at Scala Solutions (acquired by Typesafe) from October 2010 to May 2011. Iulian also gained valuable experience during their time as a PhD Student/Assistant at EPFL from October 2004 to September 2010, where they conducted research in programming languages, specifically optimizations in the Scala compiler. Iulian also worked as a teaching assistant in Compilers, Advanced Compiler Construction, and Type Systems.

Iulian's early career includes a software engineering internship at Google from February 2008 to April 2008 and a role as a Software Engineer at softNRG from March 2000 to December 2002.

Iulian Dragos obtained a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Universitatea "Politehnica" din Timișoara in 2003. Iulian then went on to pursue a PhD in Programming Languages at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2004 to 2010. In 2014, they obtained a certification in Mining Massive Datasets with Distinction from Coursera.
