Gary Capozziello

Award-winning violinist Gary Capozziello enjoys a varied musical life as both highly versatile performer and pedagogue. A frequent soloist with orchestra, his concerto appearances have included concerts with the Manchester Symphony, the New Haven Civic, American Chamber Orchestra, Connecticut Valley Chamber Orchestra, Torrington Symphony, Hartt Symphony and the Hartt Wind Ensemble.

In addition to concerto competitions, he has won a range of awards including the Jerry Malafronte Scholarship for Musical Excellence and the Nogan/Wright Music Memorial Award. Gary continues to present solo recitals regularly, combining diverse repertoire with the masterpieces of the violin canon. A proud product of his native Fairfield, CT, he has twice been featured guest artist at the Annual Fairfield County String Festival, and he has made appearances on “The Exchange” television broadcast and benefit concerts for Music for Youth and South Shore Music Inc.

As a chamber performer, he is a founding member of the Atlas Piano Trio, and he has performed with such luminaries as Nina Tichman, Daniel Phillips, Lila Brown, Katie Lansdale, Darrett Adkins and Florence Millet. He has spent two summers performing at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Festival, as well as receiving scholarships and/or fellowships to the Cambridge International Music Academy (UK), Texas Music Festival, NYU String Quartet Program, Maine Chamber Music Seminar and the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy.

He is completing his doctoral dissertation at The Hartt School on an unpublished manuscript of Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin, where he received a full scholarship as member of the 2020 honors chamber music program. He also served as doctoral teaching assistant to Professor Katie Lansdale. Gary earned his B.M. at SUNY Purchase Conservatory and his M.M. from New England Conservatory, where his principal teachers were Laurie Smukler, Lucy Chapman and Nick Kitchen. Gary also spent several summers at the prestigious Meadowmount School of Music, where he studied with Stephen Shipps. He has been chosen to perform in masterclass for many of today’s most influential artists, including Isaac Stern, Midori, Maxim Vengerov, Pamela Frank and Ani Kavafian, and in chamber music masterclasses for members of the Juilliard, Mendelssohn, Tokyo, Borromeo, American, Orion, Audubon, Fine Arts and Chicago String Quartets. Gary joined the Hartford Symphony in 2016, and is also assistant principal second violin of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony.
