John Nicol

Senior Director, Engineering at HealthRhythms

John joins from Google as a senior engineering leader with over 30 years experience in the Boston high-technology sector. He has worked with several of the worlds' most prestigious and innovative software and hardware technology companies including GTE Laboratories, Avaya, Polycom, Akamai, Bose, Fitbit, and Google. Serving in a variety of senior IC and leadership roles, he has built substantial technical and management expertise spanning a broad array of technology areas including: internet, communications networks, SaaS platforms, IoT, conferencing and collaboration, mobile communications, VOIP, video applications, content distribution networks, and digital fitness management. John has considerable experience managing large and geographically distributed engineering teams, most recently having led a 100 heads engineering organization at Google spanning the USA and eastern Europe.

John enjoys sharing his interest in technology with others and previously created a graduate-level semester course on Multimedia Communications that he subsequently co-taught on multiple occasions as an adjunct professor in the Computer Science Department at Tufts University. John holds several US and European patents and has co-authored around 40 peer-reviewed conference & journal papers and book chapters covering various aspects of distributed computing. The quality of his work has received multiple performance awards including GTE Corporations' top award for creative technical achievement and innovation. John holds B.Sc. (with First Class Honors) and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Strathclyde University, Scotland and Lancaster University, England respectively. He has been a Senior Member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) for over 20 years.
