Matthew Spendiff

Matthew Spendiff has over 20 years of work experience in the field of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. Matthew currently works as a Principal Scientist at Sosei Heptares since December 2022. In their previous role at the same company, they served as a Senior Scientist II Medicinal Chemistry from January 2021 to December 2022. Prior to that, they worked as a Senior Scientist I Medicinal Chemistry from May 2018 to January 2021.

Before joining Sosei Heptares, Matthew worked at Proximagen Limited as a Principal Scientist from April 2017 to April 2018 and as a Senior Scientist from April 2014 to March 2017.

Matthew started their career at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in 2007 as a medicinal chemist. During their time there, they gained extensive experience in hit-to-lead and lead optimization of novel compounds for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. Matthew also had exposure to various drug discovery disciplines and contributed to multiple drug discovery programs. Additionally, they served as a laboratory manager and demonstrated strong supervisory skills.

Prior to joining Novartis, Matthew worked at ICI Paints as a new product development chemist from August 2001 to September 2005.

Throughout their career, Matthew has shown expertise in theoretical and practical organic synthesis, interpretation of biological data, and presentation skills. Matthew has also been involved in patent applications and has mentored and supervised trainees and apprentices.

Matthew Spendiff completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemistry at the University of Reading from 1998 to 2001. Following that, they pursued a Master of Science (MS) in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Newcastle University from 2005 to 2006. In addition to their academic qualifications, Matthew also obtained the certification of being a Member Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry from the Royal Society of Chemistry in March 2021.
