Samuel Haysom

Research Scientist at Heptares Therapeutics

Samuel Haysom has a diverse work experience in the field of molecular biology and protein research. Samuel is currently employed as a Research Scientist at Sosei Heptares, where they utilize cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) to solve structures of GPCRs with candidate ligands, contributing to the development of Structure-Based Drug Design. At Sosei Heptares, Samuel is involved in all stages of the cryoEM pipeline, from sample preparation to atomic model building.

Prior to their current position, Samuel worked as a PHD Candidate at the University of Leeds, focusing on studying the BAM complex, an essential membrane protein foldase and potential antibiotic target in Gram-negative bacteria. In this role, they extensively utilized cryo-electron microscopy, along with other biochemical and biophysical techniques, to enhance understanding of the protein's mechanism.

Additionally, Samuel gained experience as a PIPs Intern at Singer Instruments, where they developed code to track the mentions of the company's products in scientific literature. Samuel also designed a web dashboard to present the results interactively on the company's website. This position allowed Samuel to bridge their scientific knowledge with industry application.

During their undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at the University of York, Samuel acquired a solid foundation in the field. As part of their academic journey, they completed an industrial placement with Heptares, where they contributed to the thermostabilization of G-protein coupled receptors. Samuel used techniques such as site-directed mutagenesis and high-throughput protein thermostability assays to identify and combine stabilizing receptor mutations.

Overall, Samuel Haysom's work experience demonstrates their expertise in cryo-electron microscopy, protein research, and the application of scientific knowledge in industry settings.

Samuel Haysom completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with a Year in Industry at the University of York from 2014 to 2018. After that, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Structural Biology at the University of Leeds from 2018 to 2022.
