Brian Root is a Senior Quantitative Analyst at Human Rights Watch since March 2008, where responsibilities include conducting data analyses for reports and authoring various publications. As a consultant, Brian has documented human rights violations through quantitative analyses and descriptive statistics. In 2012, Brian designed and implemented the Academic Freedom Index while working with the Scholars at Risk Network. Previous experience includes serving as a Research Associate for The Columbia Group for Children in Adversity, assisting in a feasibility study for monitoring attacks on education, and working as a Research Assistant at Tulane University, contributing to global estimates of malaria burden. Education includes a Ph.D. and a Master of Science in International Development from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Arts in Writing from UC San Diego.
