Emily Shames is an experienced professional in the outdoor education and archaeological sectors, currently serving as the Director of Culture and Community at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School since March 2023. Prior to this role, Emily held various positions including Course Director, Staff Trainer, and Field Instructor at Voyageur Outward Bound School from November 2018 to April 2023, and Program Manager, Course Director, and Staff Trainer at Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School from March 2016 to October 2020. Emily's archaeological expertise was developed during the position of Archaeological Square Supervisor for the Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon from 2013 to 2015, where management included supervising excavations and training team members on excavation techniques and pottery identification. Academic qualifications include a Master's degree in Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Arts with double major in Archaeology and Earth and Environmental Science from Wesleyan University.
