Marcel Karperien began their career in 1991 as a PhD-student at the Hubrecht Institute. In 1995, they moved to the Leiden University Medical Center, where they were an Associate Professor. In 2006, they co-founded the biotech company Percuros B.V., providing services in therapy and drug development using cell and animal models combined with sophisticated non-invasive and longitudinal imaging. In 2012, they joined the University of Twente as a Professor in Developmental BioEngineering, where their research group aimed to develop an injectable plaster to cure osteoarthritis. In 2014, they founded Hy2Care B.V., and in 2015 they founded LipoCoat BV, which has developed an innovative universal method for introducing a non-fouling biomimetic coating on any type of material.
Marcel Karperien obtained their PhD degree in Molecular Developmental Biology from Utrecht University in 1995. Prior to that, they earned a Master's degree in Molecular Biology from Utrecht University in 1991.
