Tom Van Loon began their work experience in 1997, working as a Forest Management Planner for the Vlaamse overheid and the Vlaamse Maatschappij voor Watervoorziening. Tom then moved on to work as a Nature and Forest expert in Spatial planning for Omgeving in 1998. In 1999, Tom joined the UNDP Program as a UNV Forest and Rangeland Technical Assistant. In 2001, they became a Forest Manager for IFO Danzer until 2005. Finally, Tom worked as a Manager for INTERHOLCO AG starting in 2005.
Tom Van Loon completed their M.Sc. in Tropical Forestry from Wageningen University from 2005 to 2007. Prior to that, they pursued a Bio-engineer degree in Land- and Forest Management from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven from 2000 to 2005. The field of study for both degrees has not been provided.
