Helmut DeGraff Mayer has a extensive and diverse work experience in the areas of risk management, operational risk, management consulting, and financial services. Helmut currently serves as the Global Head of Non Financial Risk at the International Monetary Fund, responsible for identifying, assessing, mitigating, and monitoring various risks. Prior to this, they held senior roles at HSBC, overseeing operational and resilience risk, and at American Express, managing business unit operational risk events and supporting risk reporting. Helmut has also worked at EY, Morgan Stanley, Harper & Nilsson, Egon Zehnder International, and Citigroup Private Bank, gaining experience in risk advisory, credit risk control, market research, strategy implementation, and compliance. Helmut also has a background in coaching at the Manhattan Soccer Club.
Helmut DeGraff Mayer completed their education at various institutions and obtained several certifications. Helmut first attended the International Bilingual School of Provence from 1994 to 1997, where they earned their A-levels in German, French, History, English, and Biology. Following this, from 1997 to 2002, they pursued their Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at Tulane University, majoring in History, International Relations, and German.
In recent years, Helmut pursued further education at the Gies College of Business - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. From 2021 to 2023, they undertook a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, focusing on general business studies. As part of this program, they obtained additional certifications including a Managerial Economics & Business Analysis Specialization in September 2022 and a Strategic Leadership & Management Specialization in July 2022. Prior to their MBA, in September 2018, they also obtained a PRMIA Operational Risk Management (ORM) Certificate from the Professional Risk Managers’ International Association (PRMIA).
