Ben Sommer has a diverse work experience spanning various organizations and roles. Ben started their career as a Finance Intern for Keith Ellison for Congress in 2010. Ben then worked as a Community Organizer for Dorchester Environmental Health Coalition from 2011 to 2012. In 2012, Ben joined Mass Farmers Markets as a Market Manager, where they managed the Copley Square Farmers Market and handled various responsibilities such as enforcing market regulations, permitting, and managing the EBT program. Ben also worked as a Project Manager for Roslindale Village Main Street from 2012 to 2015, where they planned and managed annual events and handled administrative tasks. Ben then joined the City of Somerville in 2015 as an Economic Development Assistant, where they managed the city's Brownfield redevelopment grant program and served as a liaison to the Assembly Row developer. Ben was later promoted to the role of Economic Development Specialist, where they managed programs and strategic priorities for the city's workforce development practice. In 2020, Ben joined Jobs for the Future (JFF) as a Senior Manager in JFFLabs, where they worked until 2022. Ben then became an Associate Director of the Work Unit before eventually becoming the Director of Solutions Design and Delivery.

Ben Sommer began their education journey in 2007 when they enrolled in Carleton College. Ben pursued a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and successfully completed their studies in 2011. After a few years, they decided to further their education and enrolled in Northeastern University in 2016. Ben pursued a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Policy, which they completed in 2019.

In 2021, Ben began pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the Questrom School of Business, Boston University. The expected completion of their degree is in 2023.

In addition to their formal education, Ben has also obtained additional certifications. Ben has completed courses such as "Property Cash Flow Analysis for Planners" and "Time Value of Money for Planners" offered by Planetizen Courses.
