John Kokotilo has extensive work experience in the field of fire and emergency services. John started their career in 1980 with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, where they served for 30 years. During their tenure, they held various roles such as Training Officer, Lead Training Officer (Chief), Firefighter I/II, Lieutenant, Captain, and finally Chief. John was also responsible for providing core competency training to Edmonton Fire Rescue personnel and personally trained over 500 recruits. In 2010, they left Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and joined Lac la Biche County Fire/Rescue Services as the Manager of Protective Services, Regional Fire Chief, Director of Emergency Management, and Disaster Service. John held this position until at least 2014. Additionally, they are the President of Fire-Fit Training Center since 2007.

John Kokotilo's education history includes several institutions and fields of study. From 2013 to 2025, they attended AEMA - Alberta Emergency Management Agency, where they pursued a degree in Crisis/Emergency/Disaster Management. During this time, they completed courses such as ICS 400, PIO, ECC I/II, DEM I/II, AHIMT - BLK. 3, MEO, AEA, WECS.

Starting from 1983 and ongoing until 2025, John studied at Lakeland College, specializing in Fire Service Instructor - Level II Emergency. Throughout their tenure at Lakeland College, they pursued numerous courses including NFPA 1001 - I/II, 1002, 1003, 1021 I/II, 1041 I/II, 1521, 1670, and ISM - Level I/II, 472.

In 1980, John enrolled in Vermillion Fire Training School and Vermillion Fire College, where they pursued Fire Services Administration and completed numerous NFPA accredited courses. The duration of their studies at these institutions is not specified.
