Jim brings 35 years of public affairs experience during which he has been the president and co-owner of his Kansas City-based firm, SGB Communications.
Jim has directed hundreds of assignments for government and trade associations and companies in the communications, development, energy, financial, health care, and transportation sectors. He provides counsel, as well as develops and implements targeted governmental relations strategies to impact public policy decisions and secure regulatory approval, and the award of contracts and purchases by government. Jim provides community and public relations services to broaden public support and manage media issues. He has directed federal, state, and local candidate campaigns, as well as state and local economic development election campaigns. Jim held state appointments to serve on regulatory boards, served on transition teams of Governor’s elect, and on local government committees.
Jim remains active as a board member of international organizations with a focus on North America, and he has directed tri-national transportation/security and public health projects. Jim has provided international representation and trade consulting services in Russia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, and Central America. He served as an onsite public relations advisor to the Government of Kuwait during the 1990 to 1991 war in the Gulf.
He has been owner and board member of media companies, banks, and real estate ventures. In the 1980’s he was a founder and executive vice president of American City Business Journals, which was a NASDQ company that published weekly business newspapers in 36 cities. Jim directed the merger and start up of over 20 local newspapers prior to selling the company in 1988.
Jim held presidential appointment as a regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in which he managed policy initiatives and issues with state and local government. He also managed nationwide projects for the White House. He held an appointment by the Governor to direct the Missouri Department of Social Services to manage agency operations and the transition to new departments of Health and of Corrections. Jim has held positions with Jackson County, Missouri as intergovernmental relations director; staffed a County Transition Committee; served as Director of Health and Welfare and Director of Corrections.
Jim received a MPA and MBA degree from the University of Missouri/Kansas City and a BSBA degree from Rockhurst University. While pursuing these degrees, he held management positions with Mead, Macy’s, and Hartford.
