Hybrid Staff Lawyer - Indigenous Legal Services at Legal Aid Ontario

Matt Stone has extensive work experience in the legal field, particularly in serving Indigenous clients and communities. Matt worked as a Lawyer and Lands Consultant for the Aamjiwnaang First Nation since 2021. Prior to that, they were a Hybrid Staff Lawyer for Legal Aid Ontario from 2013, where they supported the Aboriginal Justice Strategy program and provided legal services for Indigenous clients in family law and criminal law matters in Sarnia. Matt also served as a member of the Criminal Law Advisory Committee during their time at Legal Aid Ontario. Before joining Legal Aid Ontario, Matt worked as a Lawyer in private practice, specializing in criminal and child protection cases with an emphasis on Indigenous clients in the Sarnia area. Matt had a unique interest and experience with the Gladue courts. Matt also had previous experience as a Lawyer in Toronto, operating their own practice with a focus on Criminal Law and government policy advocacy. Additionally, Matt had a background in sports, having played hockey for the Ottawa 67s Hockey Club from 1990 to 1992.

Matt Stone attended York University from 1992 to 1994, where they studied Applied Mathematics within the Sciences field. After graduating from York University, they pursued their education further by attending York University - Osgoode Hall Law School from 1994 to 1997. At Osgoode Hall, they earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in Law.
