David Shook is a prominent figure in the field of creative writing and literary criticism, currently serving as a Fellow at the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities and a Visiting Teaching Fellow at the Manchester Writing School since June 2017. As a Contributing Editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books and World Literature Today, Shook has contributed significantly to contemporary literary discourse. Previously, Shook was the Founding Editor of Phoneme Media, an imprint of Deep Vellum Publishing, from January 2013 to August 2023, and has held various editorial roles at organizations including Bengal Lights and Ambit. Shook's academic contributions include serving as Affiliate Faculty for the MFA in Creative Writing at Antioch University and as an Artist in Residence at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani. Educational qualifications include an M.St. in Creative Writing - Poetry from the University of Oxford and a B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Oklahoma.
