Shafeeq Ahmed, M.D. was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the Howard Community College Board of Trustees for a six-year term through June 2028.
Dr. Ahmed is the president of Howard County General Hospital. He was named to his position in July 2021, after serving in an interim capacity since November 2020. Prior to that, he was the hospital’s chief medical officer/vice president of medical affairs for five years.
Dr. Ahmed is the president of the Howard Hospital Foundation, which provides philanthropic support to the hospital. He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Gynecology/Obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and an affiliate faculty member within the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. Previously, Dr. Ahmed served as the chief operating officer/chief medical officer of Baystate Health’s Eastern Region in Springfield, Massachusetts, and held other positions in the Baystate Health system. Prior to that, he was a lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Medical Corps, serving at the Naval Hospital – Cherry Point, North Carolina.
Dr. Ahmed earned his medical and bachelor’s degrees from Boston University, followed by a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Baystate Medical Center. He later completed a health care leader fellowship at the Massachusetts Healthcare Leadership College. He holds an MBA degree from the Isenberg School of Business at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. Dr. Ahmed resides in Clarksville with his wife, Arifa, and two teenage daughters.
