James Thompson, M.D. has extensive experience in addiction medicine and geriatric medicine. James is currently the Chief Medical Officer at the Master Center for Addiction Medicine. Previously, they founded and served as the Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Virginia Center for Addiction Medicine, where they focused on making addiction treatment more accessible and promoting evidence-based care. James has also worked as a Medical Director at Behavioral Health Group, Staunton Treatment Center, and River City Comprehensive Counseling Services. Additionally, they co-founded the Goodness Health Group and served as its Chief Medical Officer, overseeing the development of the company's medical treatment philosophy. In the field of addiction medicine, they also served as the Medical Director and Owner of Clean Life Medical, a clinic specializing in outpatient addiction treatment. Earlier in their career, they worked as an Addiction Medicine Physician at The Farley Center and as the Medical Director at Williamsville Wellness. Prior to their work in addiction medicine, they co-founded and served as the Executive Director of Adaptive Geriatrics, a company that focused on providing improved healthcare to nursing home patients. Throughout their career, James Thompson, M.D. has been committed to patient-centered, evidence-based, and compassionate care in both addiction medicine and geriatric medicine.
Dr. James Thompson has a diverse educational background. James completed their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Zoology/Animal Biology at Brigham Young University from 1992 to 1998. Later, from 2000 to 2004, they attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, where they obtained their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. During this time, they specialized in the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
In addition to their degrees, Dr. Thompson has obtained several certifications. In 2012, they became a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). A year later, in 2013, they became a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). These certifications highlight their expertise and commitment to the field of addiction medicine.
