David McCoy began their career in law enforcement in 2003 as a Deputy Sheriff at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. In 2005, they joined the Town of Stanley, NC as a Police Sergeant and worked there until 2014. In 2014, McCoy became a Police Officer at the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. David was later promoted to Executive Law Enforcement Officer and then to Assistant Director of Law Enforcement. Alongside their work, McCoy was actively involved in the North Carolina ABC Law Enforcement Officers Association, where they served as Secretary from 2016-2018, Vice President from 2018-2021, and eventually became the Past President from 2021-2022.
David McCoy has a diverse education history in the field of criminal justice and public administration. David obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration from Western Carolina University in the years 2015 to 2018. Prior to that, they completed an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in Criminal Justice/Safety Studies from Gaston College from 2013 to 2015.
In 2019, David pursued further education and enrolled at East Carolina University where they earned a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration from 2019 to 2022. During this time, they also completed a Graduate Certificate in Public Management and Leadership from the same institution.
David expanded their knowledge and skills through additional certifications. David participated in the Administrative Officers Management Program #88 at North Carolina State University in 2020. David also attended the FBI National Academy Class 285, achieving the designation of "FBI National Academy #285" in March 2023. In addition, they completed the Leadership Certificate Program offered by the North Carolina Justice Academy in May 2022.
Seeking continued professional growth, David pursued a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia, which they completed in 2023.
