Conan Smith

Conan Smith is an accomplished leader in environmental advocacy and public policy with extensive experience in community engagement and strategic communication. Currently serving as President & CEO of the Michigan Environmental Council since May 2019, Conan leads initiatives that promote sustainability and equitable living conditions in Michigan. Formerly a LEO Lecturer I at the University of Michigan, Conan enriched graduate education through hands-on learning experiences. As a Partner at Adaptive Strategics, expertise in facilitation and strategic communication was applied to navigate complex policy challenges. Significant service as a Commissioner for Washtenaw County included roles as Chair and Vice Chair of the Ways & Means committee, championing progressive initiatives. Prior leadership experience includes serving as Executive Director at Metro Matters, where Conan earned recognition for innovative practices. Educational qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Writing and English Literature from the University of Michigan and a Master’s Degree in Dispute Resolution from Wayne State University.
