Movement Politics Department Director at Michigan United

Steve James has a diverse work experience in the political and advocacy field. In 2012, they worked as a Home Care Organizer for SEIU, followed by roles as a Campaign Manager for Gretchen Driskell for State Representative and Field Director/GOTV Director for Mary Kerwin for State Representative. Steve also served as a Constituent Services Representative for Congressman David Alan Curson in 2012 and a Regional Organizer for the Michigan Democratic Party/JLC in 2013. In 2014, they worked as a Campaign Manager for Doug Spade for State Senate. From 2015 to 2017, they worked as a Legislative Aide for State Representative Bill LaVoy in the Michigan House of Representatives, where they achieved policy goals and served as the primary director of constituent relations. Starting in 2017, they joined SEIU Michigan State Council, first as a Member Engagement Coordinator, where they improved member relationships and achieved legislative goals, and then as Political Director, where they developed and led political endorsement programs and achieved better legislative outcomes for working families. In 2020, they joined Michigan United as the Voter Registration Director and later transitioned to the role of Data Director. Steve James also has experience as a freelance graphic designer, providing services such as logo design, mail pieces, and web design for political candidates and friends throughout their career in politics.

Steve James attended Michigan State University from 2005 to 2009, where they pursued a Bachelor's of Science degree in Political Science.
