Ulf Melgaard has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and organizations. Ulf currently serves as the Director of International Law and Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark since September 2019. Prior to this, they held the position of Head of Department for Legal Affairs and International Relations at the Ministry of Higher Education and Science starting from March 2016.
Ulf has a long history with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, where they previously served as the Deputy Head of Department for EU Law from March 2014 to March 2016. During this time, they were responsible for human resource management, strategic management, administrative and budgetary management, as well as providing legal and political advice to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Ulf also provided legal advice to other departments of the ministry and contributed to inter-ministerial EU coordination and representation of Danish interests in EU negotiations.
Prior to their roles in EU Law, Ulf held various positions within the ministry, including Senior Adviser in EU Law, Head of Section for International Law, First Secretary, and Head of Section for Trade Policy. Ulf also served as an External Lecturer in Public International Law and European Community Law at the University of Copenhagen from August 2006 to 2010.
Before joining the ministry, Ulf worked as an Attorney at Law Firm Poul Schmith/Kammeradvokaten from August 2004 to August 2007. Ulf also served as an Officer (reserve) in the Danish Armed Forces from August 2002 to August 2004.
Ulf started their career as an Assistant at the Danish Employers' Confederation from May 2000 to July 2001 and also worked as an Assistant at the Danish Parliament from 1997 to 1999.
Ulf Melgaard's education history begins in 1993 when they attended Rødkilde Amtsgymnasium for three years, where the specific degree and field of study are not specified. In 1997, Ulf pursued their higher education at Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, where they obtained a degree in Law, specifically Cand. jur, in 2005. Ulf then furthered their studies at the University of Oxford from 2001 to 2002, pursuing a degree in European and Comparative Law, called Magister Juris. Additionally, from 2002 to 2004, Ulf attended Danish Defence College, specializing in Military Interpreter (Russian) and achieving the rank of 1st LT.
