Pete Cowan

Director National Security Operations at Ministry of Justice - New Zealand

Pete Cowan has an extensive work experience in the field of law enforcement and security. Pete has held various significant roles throughout their career. Starting in 1989, they worked as a Criminal Investigation Branch Supervisor in the New Zealand Police until 2000. From 2000 to 2002, they served as the Commander of the Kilbirnie Community Policing Centre. In 2002, they became an Emergency Response Commander and later transitioned to the role of Human Resources Manager, focusing on Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity. From 2006 to 2011, they held multiple positions in the New Zealand Police as an Area Commander, NZ Police Contingent Commander in Timor Leste and Afghanistan, and Wellington Police Prevention Manager. In 2011, they took on the role of NZDF Provost Marshal in the New Zealand Defence Force, overseeing the Navy, Army, and Air Force Police. Finally, in 2020, Cowan assumed the position of Director National Security Operations at the Ministry of Justice, where they lead a team responsible for assessing security requirements and implementing strategies to maintain the safety and security of Judicial Officers, stakeholders, and court users.

Pete Cowan completed an Executive Leadership program at Harvard Business School Executive Education in 2017. In 2014, they attended the New Zealand Institute for Strategic Leadership where they completed the Strategic Leadership Program. Prior to that, in 2001, they obtained a Master's Degree in Business Studies from Massey University. Their undergraduate education was also completed at Massey University, where they earned a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resource Management in 1999.
