Amr Elhelw

Amr Elhelw, PhD, has a diverse range of work experience spanning multiple roles and companies. Amr is currently serving as a Software Engineering Lead/Manager at MongoDB since February 2023.

Prior to this, they were employed at Meta from 2019 to 2023. At Meta, they held the position of Software Engineering Manager from June 2021 to January 2023, where they supported the Ent Retrieval and Ent Foundation teams within the Core Data group. Amr also served as a Staff Software Engineer from February 2019 to June 2021, acting as the tech lead for the Ent Retrieval team.

Before joining Meta, Amr worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Google from October 2015 to February 2019. During their tenure at Google, they were a member of the F1 team, contributing to the development of a distributed relational database system.

From 2013 to 2015, Amr held roles at Pivotal Software, Inc., where they served as Staff 1 Software Engineer and Senior Member of Technical Staff, both focusing on query processing.

Amr also gained experience at Greenplum as a Principal Software Engineer and Senior Software Engineer from 2012 to 2013. Notably, they worked on the design and development of the Orca query optimizer for Pivotal Greenplum Database and Pivotal HAWQ.

Their journey in the field of database research began in 2005 at the University of Waterloo, where they worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant until 2011. During this time, they contributed to the Continuous and Adaptive Query Optimization project.

Amr's work with IBM includes roles as a Research Intern, Database Research Group, in 2010, and as a CAS Research Student at IBM Canada from 2005 to 2008. Amr also contributed as a software developer at POET Egypt LLC from 2003 to 2004, and as a Research and Teaching Assistant at Alexandria University, Egypt from 2001 to 2004. In the latter role, they focused on Intelligent Databases and Web Technologies, and developed an Intelligent Database Application for the Semantic Web.

Amr Elhelw, PhD, completed their education with a strong focus on Computer Science. Amr began by pursuing a Bachelor's degree at Alexandria University from 1996 to 2001. Amr then proceeded to pursue a Master's degree at the same institution from 2001 to 2004. Amr continued their academic journey at the University of Waterloo, where they pursued a PhD in Computer Science from 2005 to 2011.
