Craig Burgess

Craig Burgess is an accomplished legal professional with extensive experience in various roles, including General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Morehouse College since January 2024. Previously, Craig served as General Counsel at Columbus State University, where responsibilities included advising the President and senior administrators, and establishing the Office of Legal Affairs, Ethics, and Compliance. At South Carolina State University, Craig also held the position of General Counsel, providing legal advice across multiple substantive areas, in addition to serving as Interim Vice President of Operations. Prior experience includes Special Counsel at Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, L.L.C. and Senior Litigation Counsel at BellSouth/AT&T, where complex litigation and corporate counsel responsibilities were pivotal. Craig began a legal career at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, LLP, achieving a notable defense verdict rate in trials. Educational background includes a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in English from The Citadel.
