Joe Russell

Joe Russell is a seasoned professional with extensive expertise in applied biology and bioinformatics, currently serving as Capability Manager II (Principal Scientist) at MRIGlobal since December 2015. Joe's work focuses on developing innovative computational methods and systems for microbial ecology, biosurveillance, and public health, along with advancing genotype-to-phenotype predictive modeling and portable molecular biosurveillance platforms. Joe's prior experience includes roles as Senior Scientist, where Joe enabled metagenomics in diagnostics and forensics, and Postdoctoral Research Associate, contributing to infectious disease advancements. An academic background includes a Ph.D. in Microbial Ecology from the University of Delaware and a B.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Arizona. Joe has also held various laboratory and research positions, culminating in significant contributions to microbial genomics and ecological studies.
