Rod Macneil GAICD has extensive experience in the museum and arts sector. Rod started their career at the J. Paul Getty Museum as a Public Information Associate in 1996. From 1997 to 2007, they worked at UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive as the Director of External Relations.
In 2008, Rod joined Museums Victoria and held various roles over the years. Rod started as the Public Relations Manager and then became the Marketing and Communications Manager. From 2012 to 2017, they served as the Head of Communication and Partnerships, where they successfully developed strategic marketing and communications campaigns and grew the Museum Members program by over 60%.
In 2017, Rod was promoted to Chief of Staff at Museums Victoria, where they led the organization's strategy, governance, and corporate affairs. Rod played a key role in delivering the strategic plan for Museums Victoria and provided leadership for critical issues and government advocacy.
Currently, Rod serves as the Director of Governance and Strategic Planning at Museums Victoria, where they provide executive leadership for all governance activities and oversees the development and delivery of the organizational strategy and planning framework.
Rod Macneil completed their Ph.D. in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne from 1992 to 1996. Rod also attended the Graduate Certificate of Social Impact program at Swinburne University of Technology from 2020 to 2021. In 2019, they completed the Company Directors Course at the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Additionally, they participated in the Folio Community Leadership Program at Leadership Victoria from 2013. Rod also worked as a Research Fellow at Monash University's Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies from 2003 to 2004.
