Dr Andrew Dean is a passionate advocate for the benefits of telehealth in extending specialist emergency medical care to people who need service, during stressful and critical times. He has been a practising emergency specialist doctor (FACEM) for nearly 30 years, working at St John of God Hospital Ballarat, in regional Victoria.
In 1984 Dr Dean completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne, and moved to Ballarat Base Hospital to undertake post-graduate training. He worked briefly in general practice also, and achieved his Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine in 1992. Dr Dean has been involved with leadership in clinical, administrative and educational roles since then, and is actively involved teaching medical students in his Emergency Department whenever he works. His areas of interest include risk management, clinical simulation, team building in critical care areas, and personal resilience and well being when working in stressful healthcare environments. His passion for medicine extends into educating co-workers about a holistic approach to their practice of emergency medical care.
In 2017, Dr Andrew Dean published a book titled ‘Moving Light: Meditation Journeys’ which encourages the use of meditation on a daily basis to achieve inner mind and body balance. It is through his dedication to strengthening the inner self, that he has been able to combine his clinical skills with an intuitive awareness of the patient’s needs.
