Gamunu Wijetunge

Director, Office Of Emergency Medical Services at National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA

Gamunu Wijetunge has extensive work experience in the field of emergency medical services. Gamunu served as the Director of the Office of Emergency Medical Services at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from January 2022 to present. Prior to this role, they had been working at NHTSA as an Emergency Medical Services Specialist since November 2001.

In addition to their work at NHTSA, Wijetunge also had significant involvement with the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad. Gamunu served as a Captain, Firefighter, and Paramedic since 1995. Gamunu was elected as the President in April 2014 and held this position until December 2022. In 2004, they also served as the Second Vice President, where they were responsible for recruiting volunteers.

Furthermore, Wijetunge served as a Volunteer Fire Captain and Paramedic at the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service since 1995.

Gamunu Wijetunge obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Emergency Health Services from the University of Maryland Baltimore County between 1997 and 2001. Later, between 2006 and 2008, they pursued a Master of Public Management degree in Public Policy/Public Administration from the University of Maryland. Gamunu Wijetunge also holds the certification of a Nationally Registered Paramedic from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, but the specific month and year of obtaining this certification are not provided.
